Spring is here. Yes you read it right the first official day of spring is Sunday. This beautiful sunny week in Los Angeles makes me feel like it’s already here. While spring is among us everyone busts out their mops, dust rags and windex but we forgot to spring clean our makeup bags and medicine cabinets. Have no fear I am here to help. This is the best kind of spring cleaning, after throwing out all your old makeup you get to go out and buy more.
When to Toss:
Mascara – 3 months, you should almost be done with it by then anyways. My rule of thumb is smell your mascara, if it makes your nose curl toss it.
Eyeshadow – 2 years, if it’s broken throw it out, you will never use it. If you only touched it once in 6 months, throw it out you will never use it. Eyeshadows last awhile as long as you take care of them and clean the brushes you use regularly for your eyeshadows.
Power and Blush – 2 years, the same as powder eyeshadow.
Eyeliner – 1 to 2 years, sharpen them after each use so your tip will be fresh.
Foundation and Concealer – 1 year, If it starts to separate or has a funky smell toss it!
Lipstick and Lipgloss – 2 to 3 years, you can smell when a lipstick is bad. Also if the lipstick is dry toss it and get a new one.
Nail Polish – 2 to 3 years, If it starts to separate or become goopy toss it. Throw it out if you only used it once.
Brushes – Forever, good quality brushes should last a lifetime with proper care. Clean your brushes weekly if you can’t at least monthly. You can use brush cleaner or gentle shampoo. Throw out brushes that are following apart and invest in better quality brushes.
Remember to keep the lid tight on your cosmetics and keep them away from extreme heat and cold. Also keep stored in a dark place to avoid harsh bright light from breaking down the product.
Now that all your old expired makeup is tossed in the garbage, head to Sephora to play and experiment with new shades. Don’t forget while you are at it why not organize your makeup. Opt for a Z Palette to put all your makeup pans in one convenient case or a train case to keep it all together in one place. Have a beautiful spring!
